R.I.P. Monotonix?

Last night was Monotonixs’ final gig for, at least, the foreseeable future and it left me sweaty, smiling, but disappointed that they didn’t get the viking funeral they deserved.

The set started off in true Monotonix style with the band setting up on the floor and the crowd instantly wrapping around them as closely as they could; eager to provide the personal interaction which sets Monotonix shows apart from so many others. Blasting through a mixture of new material and old favourites such as Body Language the pace was unrelenting from the opening notes to the final moments and, despite the chaos, smiles never left the crowds faces and it seemed to be the perfect swan song for such a phenomenal live band.

Unfortunately the set took a nasty turn once the band tried to relocate back up onto the stage. I know what they were thinking, people kept falling into the drum kit and some space was needed, but the result was everyone swarming onto the stage after them.

Whilst this isn’t a problem on paper, a mixture of heavy handed security pushing people off the stage and, lets say, “drum kit relocation problems” (Ami told me after the gig that someone tried to effectively throw a hi hat down to the crowded floor) caused the band to decide to cut the set short and call it a day.

Of course I’m disappointed that one of the best bands I’ve seen live had to cut such a great show short but with hindsight they went out the way they lived, on the border of total chaos but always retaining the sense of fun which set them apart from so many other bands who would have let the situation turn sour.
