Burial - Street Halo

I really don't care for dubstep. I secretly think that no one does; it's just a bad joke that spiralled out of control. One morning in 2005, every flat-peak wearing white boy suddenly realised mid-hangover that everyone else liked drum & bass so much that it was no longer cool. Not only did their nan know who Pendulum were but had strong opinions about their mainstream success. So one by one everyone started to pay attention to drum & bass's uglier sister dubstep in the hope that mainstream culture wouldn't dare follow. But it did. The pattern repeated itself and now we're left with a big pile of wobble.

However. One incandescent beacon of hope persistently shines through the muck and the mire.
It seems slightly unfair to lump Burial in with the rest of the bedroom DJ shitmunchers because his sound is such a contrast from the infamous wobbly bass tripe of his apparent peers. Maybe this is why Will Bevan 'did a Banksy' and remained anonymous until August 2008; well after his first two albums had received huge acclaim. 

It's been a busy time for Burial recently. Three weeks ago we got the exciting (and perhaps somewhat surprising) announcement that Burial, Thom Yorke and Four Tet would be collaborating on a double A side 12" single; which I've embedded below. A fortnight later his new three track EP Street Halo was released; a 20 minute record that doesn't dramatically deviate from his earlier work. However in a way I admire the consistency; 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. I knew what I was expecting and there it was: a quality snippet of Burial goodness.

This has all come together to successfully create a renewed hype around the patron saint of dubstep in preparation for his third LP later in the year. Based on the calibre of Street Halo, you can certainly colour me captivated.
