Suuns - Zeroes QC

Suuns are a Canadian four piece who make dark arty post-punk prog rock. Their 2010 debut album Zeroes QC was produced by compatriot Jace Lasek of Besnard Lakes and is a harrowing experience showcasing the band's creative inginuity for making frankly odd sounding music. Take the track Pie IX, for instance. It's a prime example of the weird yet curiously incapsulating sound of Suuns, employing the incoherently rhythmic vocals of Ben Shemie through some kind of haunting harmoniser laid over an industrial synth bass line. Then immediately from the sparseness of Pie IX it's in to Marauder; a sub two minute track with hints of Battles, and then record twists again into Sweet Nothing; a monotonic seven minuiter reminiscent of Holy Fuck.



A strong sense diversity runs throughout Zeroes QC, which is probably why I enjoy it so much. It belies the fact that this is the group's debut record and you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise. Instead their confidence to stick with the grit and churn out what sounds good shines through leaving us with a truly stunning product that's enjoyed a number of spins from yours truly since over the past couple of months.

Oh, and on case you were wondering, the band link to a page on a Thai language site from their Twitter profile, which in turn informs us that 'Suun' is the Thai digit for zero.
