The new mini-album from Arms & Sleepers, 'Nostalgia for the Absolute' was officially released yesterday in preparation for the third full LP, which is due in May. In a break from the distinctive sound of Matador, this new collection features thirteen short ambient tracks, primarily delivered by piano. The result is truly stunning. Many of the tracks strongly resemble some of Arms & Sleepers' counterparts - namely Max Richter - yet the misers touch of Max Lewis and Mirza Ramic is omnipotent throughout. Whilst Matador's strength was in the guest vocals of Ben Shepard, Nostalgia for the Absolute boasts its own melodic hooks without the presence of voice. More than a couple of tracks stand out; in particular Rondo, which is simply one of the best contemporary piano pieces I've heard.
Arms & Sleepers are one of my favourite artists at the moment. Whilst this mini-album (it clocks in at just over 27 minutes) is supposed to serve as a teaser for the upcoming LP, it carries its own merit as a crushingly beautiful piece of ambient work. I would highly recommend that you both get hold of 'Nostalgia for the Absolute' and pay attention to Arms & Sleepers; for whom it promises to be a busy 2011.
