EXPOSURE: Microdance

Every now and then a band drops us what is essentially a spam promotion email about how excellent their music is and how we should dedicate our full attention towards them accordingly. Skies Are Rare listen to every single artist to us through these means as a rule of thumb, but most of these emails end up in the bin. Ipso facto most amateur bands make dreadful music. However, sometimes the beauty of modern technology prevails and we're graced with an amateur band who knows how to both promote themselves via the internet and pick up a guitar. Heaven forbid. Any artists who meet these simple criteria will benefit from written recommendation and admiration such as this very post.

The Microdance are an east London based shoegaze-indie amalgamation spawned from the mind of song writer Alex Keevill in 2008. Currently accompanied by Leigh Redding (guitar), Caleb Clayton (bass), James Davies (drums), Kelly Hennessy (synth and vox); Keevill et al. make up a rare tour de force of quality young London talent. Buoyed by the success of early recordings, the band are currently doing the east-end rounds on the back of a new EP suitably entitled 'Get Dark', which was originally recorded with Bridget Walsh (keys), Paul Grant (guitars), Caleb Clayton (bass) and Michael Triponel (drums). The Microdance are an unambiguous example of pure musicianship and 'shoulder to the wheel' contemporary shoegaze. At last: a young London band who rightfully succeed in fusing unashamedly self-indulgent pop songs with humble hard-hitting rock. An immaculate singer-songwriter to band balance allows for a truly harmonious collective sound; specifically the interplay between Keevill and Walsh's vocal lines on the EP tracks. In terms of sound, The Microdance are slightly akin to modern shoegazers Ringo Deathstarr, yet clearly harbour an affinity with 90s bands such Swervedriver and Chapterhouse.

These guys' next gig is at 93 Feet East on the 2nd April, with free entry before 8pm. You'd be foolish to miss them at that price in a venue which, from a personal experience, lends itself so well to both audience and artist. It's a well known fact that it's impossible to play 93 Feet East without having a good time and delivering a good sound. I'll be at the back throwing down the cabby sauvignon and tapping my feet saying "splendid".
